When you think about February, Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays come to mind, and they should, as president’s go the two are hard to beat. They did so much to make this country what it is today.
Before the two birthdays, on February 14, is Valentine’s Day. In one form or another Valentine’s Day has been around since the 18th century. The day originated honoring an individual named Valentine who was martyred. Slowly over time it has become a celebration of love and romance throughout the world.
The main components of Valentine’s Day are flowers and candy. As a kid and even today I have been involved in the candy portion. Valentine’s stands right in line with Halloween in candy consumption. The best part of Valentine’s candy is the good stuff, chocolate.
Chocolate or not, Valentine’s has a place in today’s society more than ever. It is an opportunity to say in one way or another I appreciate the person or individual who means something to me.
It is a way to say we all make mistakes, we all do things we are not happy about; we go one direction when we should be going the other way. Valentine’s Day gives the opportunity to work on cleaning the slate.
It doesn’t take that much; a card, a note, a pleasant word, yes maybe even a dinner at a restaurant both of you like, maybe even a little wine. Doing something that says you are special. We all need that. It doesn’t need to cost a fortune. It just needs to say we are two, we are partners, and we can make it work.
Life goes on, it is great when we can smile a little and hold each other. Valentine’s Day may be only one day, but if we do it right it will carry over for months. It is worth it.
Note: You received this in the Wednesday’s paper on February 11, you have got two days before Valentines to make your plans for the big day, and it doesn’t take that much to make it an important day for everyone. Happy Valentine’s Day!
