Officials at the Radford Army Ammunition are reporting an industrial accident this past weekend with no injuries.
According to information from Mark A. Kane, Public Affairs Specialist with the Joint Munitions Command, a compromised pipe leaked a caustic solution into a watertight containment dike designed for this purpose.
“The solution was caustic, not acidic. The leak was controlled and monitored. The contained solution was released from the dike into the utility system designed to treat this kind of material. The system adjusted pH levels to ensure there was no impact to the environment,” he said.
It is not known how many employees were in the affected area when the incident occurred or nearby.
