Supervisors raise taxes by five cents

Montgomery County leaders have agreed to raise taxes for fiscal year 2026-27.

The tax increase was approved by a 5-2 vote.

During a special work session last week, Republican Todd King was the only supervisor to speak up against the increase.

“I have spoken to a lot of people. They are struggling. I don’t think this is the time to hire new people (in the county and schools). We will be in worse shape next year if the economy doesn’t pick up. I don’t feel this is the time to raise taxes,” he said.

The long-time leader said they (supervisors) need to go to Richmond and push for more money.

“They need to pay their fair share,” he said.

King was joined with a no vote by Steve R. Fijalkowski with the yes votes being

Gunin Kiran, Derek W. Kitts, Anthony M. Grafsky, Mary W. Biggs and April N. DeMotts.

The following rates were approved:

Real estate property tax levy increased from $0.76 to $0.81 per $100 of assessed value.

Personal property tax levy remains at $2.55 per $100 of assessed value.

Machinery and tools tax levy remains at $1.82 per $100 of assessed value.

Mobile homes tax levy increased from $0.76 to $0.81 per $100 of assessed value.

Aircraft tax levy remains at $1.23 per $100 of assessed value.

Supervisors also approved the overall budget in the amount of $285,739,377 for fiscal year 2026-27.

The budget decision will leave the school boards with a deficit of nearly $4 million in their proposed budget, thus sending them back to the drawing board on where to cut.
