RADFORD – Radford University held spring commencement ceremonies May 1-2, with alumnus Eugene Naughton, president of The Dollywood Company and a 1989 Radford University alum, addressing the graduates, along with a special guest.

During the main ceremony held Saturday, Naughton surprised graduates with a special video message from Dolly Parton, created specifically to congratulate Radford’s graduates.

I want to congratulate all of you,” said Parton. “I know one of your fellow Highlanders, and boy, if you learned what Eugene knows, when you get out in the big world, you’re going to do big things, because Eugene is one of the smartest and best people I know.”

Naughton announced each graduate in attendance will receive two complimentary tickets to Dollywood, drawing an enthusiastic response from the crowd.

“Radford helped shape my path, and I know it can help shape yours as powerfully,” said Naughton. “Each of you has your own version of that story, waiting for you to unfold.”

“As you pack up your belongings and leave Radford University, please remember this. Adventure isn’t a destination, it’s a mindset. It means waking up every morning, ready to learn something new, to laugh and to lead others. It is, as Dolly says, figuring out who you are and doing it on purpose.”

The Graduate Hooding Ceremony was held Friday, with master’s and doctoral candidates recognized for their achievements.

According to the university, there were 1,050 bachelor’s degrees, 327 master’s degrees, 43 doctoral degrees and a small number of certificates awarded. A total of 1,427 students participated in the ceremonies. Members of the Class of 2026 represent 11 states (including Virginia and Washington, D.C.) and six countries. Graduates range in age from 19 to 71.
