Ten women who recently joined the Alleghany Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and proved their lineal descent from a Patriot took an oath of allegiance at a luncheon held Saturday, April 11 at the Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Blacksburg.

The oath and prayer were conducted by Chapter Registrar Diane Catley and Chaplain Harriet Williams.

The DAR is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the missions of historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The Alleghany Chapter of DAR was founded in Blacksburg on January 28, 1911 and the organizing members chose “Alleghany” as the name of the chapter. In the early decades, the chapter placed two monuments commemorating local historic events. A 1916 monument memorializes a fort built by local settlers during the French and Indian War. A second monument placed in 1938 is dedicated to Colonel James Patton and pioneers who lost their lives in the Draper’s Meadow Massacre in 1755. Over the years, the chapter has also marked gravesites of several local Revolutionary War Patriots and continues to support local veterans, schools, historic sites and promote patriotism and good citizenship.
