Things continue to change in the athletic department at Virginia Tech.
The school is looking for a new athletic director and an overall university president. This week, the board of visitors are expected to hear about a business model to move the athletic department into this new era.
This plan includes several, which have gone in front of it, clearing the way for the financial flexibility of a professional sports franchise. Clemson University is one of those schools, jumpstarting a program commonly known as “Ventures.” The business model allows schools to move quickly in the “rapidly changing landscape” of college athletics.
Clemson Ventures is a strategic commercial business entity launched by Clemson University to maximize revenue-generation and provide Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) agency capabilities for student-athletes. It operates with a private-sector structure design to handle items like: In-House multimedia rights including broadcasting rights and corporate sponsorships.
Under the NIL umbrella, Clemson says “Ventures” facilitates year-round marketing opportunities and brand partnerships for athletes.
The Ventures plan also oversees the university’s media productions such as content for Clemson’s streaming platform. This also includes running sports marketing initiatives that allow local and regional businesses to partner with Clemson athletics.
The business model also gives the athletic department flexibility of a professional sports franchise.
On the issue of a new A.D., any decision could be months away as the school would be expected to name a new university president, who will have their hand in a new commander in chief.
Meanwhile, the athletic department has received a bill for over $3,000 for the removal of a parachute that crashed into the scoreboard before this year’s screen game. A LED module had to also be replaced on the board.
