Kingsley, a West Highland Terrier, helps his owner Mike Kelley, the director of the Christiansburg Engineering Department, with mapping as part of his assignment on “National Take Your Dog to Work Day.”

‘Who let the dogs out?’ would’ve been a good question to ask employees with the Town of Christiansburg last Friday.

Many of the furry workers brought a little extra smile to customers and others who stopped by town hall and other town locations. National Take Your Dog to Work Day takes place every June and encourages workplaces to allow employees to bring their dogs to the office to celebrate pet companionships and promote local shelter adoption.

Mike Kelley is the director of engineering, and he brought his 13-year-old West Highland Terrier to work.

“I think it’s fantastic. It’s great that the town allows it,” he said.

The event was created in 1999 by Pet Sitters International and is always held on the Friday following Father’s Day.

Each town office had to “puppy proof” the work spaces in order to make it safer for the four-legged workers.

Kelley said the event brings everyone’s energy up and makes people smile. Clayton Morgan brought his four-year-old German Shepherd, Maple. As the town’s land development coordinator, he typically has a lot of meetings during the day.

“She (Maple) slept through the boring meetings,” he joked.

This is the seventh year the Town of Christiansburg has participated in the event.
