Gas prices hurt, especially on a fixed income

If the current trend continues, I don’t know how much longer I will be able to write my weekly column in the News Messenger. With gas prices, it costs too much to get a story.

Last week gas in Christiansburg was $3.58, today the price was $4.18, and I don’t think we have reached the highpoint. It would not surprise me to see $4.50 for a gallon. Luckily my car doesn’t operate on premium gas, which is already at $4.99.

I feel sorry for all of us consumers. Particularly, people like me and 20 percent of the Christiansburg community who are old and retired with a single source of income. Life could be a lot worse, but it still hurts.

I guess I should go electric. I’ve heard that you can get 250 miles on one charge in electric cars. That is something to think about.

One area that is going to hurt everyone in the future, when we pay taxes, is school systems are being forced to pay the cost of fueling the buses. When you start to compute the cost of keeping school buses on the road that run on 8 miles per gallon, sooner or later citizens will be required to pay the additional cost.

On Sept. 16, the Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Center will be hosting their annual ‘Health and Wellness’ fair,’ with 50 vendors hoping to make people feel better with life in this day of ups and downs in the economy.

You might see me at the fair, trying to get donations so I can put some gas into my car.

Thought for the Day:

If we keep our chin up with a smile on our face, it is hard to lose no matter what the price of gas.
