RADFORD – Lace up your sneakers and run, walk, or cheer for a cause!

The YMCA at Virginia Tech invites the community to Braving Bisset: Run Against Hunger, a community 5K dedicated to raising awareness and support for local families experiencing food insecurity.

The race will take place Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at Bisset Park, Shelter #3, in Radford.

Proceeds from the event will support the YMCA at Virginia Tech’s food insecurity initiatives in collaboration with Beans & Rice, helping provide individuals and families with access to nutritious food and essential resources.

“I am hosting this event to help fight a problem that is far too common in America: community hunger,” said Christopher Alexander, a Radford University student organizing the race. “Radford is not a big city overflowing with people, and yet some of its residents are living without basic needs like food and water. This event may only make a small dent in the larger issue, but hopefully it creates a surge of awareness about the challenges Radford is facing.”

Through its partnership with Beans & Rice, the YMCA at Virginia Tech helps sustain and strengthen food distribution efforts in Radford. Free groceries, including fresh produce, dairy products, meat, and pantry staples, are made available to families experiencing food insecurity in a welcoming and dignified environment.

Runners and walkers of all abilities are invited to participate. Every registration is a chance to take a step toward a stronger, healthier community.
