Council approves changes to controversial development

Christiansburg Town Council was split Tuesday night on a change in the rezoning and conditional use permit that will affect a development near Peppers Ferry Road. Mayor Michael Barber had to break the tie and cast a yes vote for both measures.

The request was to rezone approximately eight acres from R-1 to R-3 with a conditional use permit for planned housing in R-3. The developer is now planning 40 single family homes and approximately 82 town homes on the back side of the parcel along Quin Stuart Blvd.

Following the vote, a large contingent of landowners from the adjacent Villa townhomes stood in dismay. Negative response has centered around the developers changes from 2014 when council approved the initial construction by Stateson Homes.

The changes would decrease the number of single-family homes within the new development.

Two years ago, council approved the rezoning of the same parcel from Agricultural to R-1 Single Family Residential with a CUP for a 76 single family lots.

Adjacent to the development is the Villas residential area, and a large contingent of residents have been outspoken on the number of multi-family homes that would not be built.

No one from Stateson made any remarks following the approval, and it is not known what the new timetable will be for construction.
