Floating pumpkin patch

The Blacksburg Aquatic Center is holding a floating pumpkin patch on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 4-6 p.m. The pool will be full of pumpkins for kids to retrieve (only one), decorate, and take home.

The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 13, but there are only 50 pumpkins available, so participants are limited. The fee is $10 for pumpkin pickers and regular aquatic center fees for non-pickers.

Hokie in women’s LAX draft

Meg Bartley, a former Virginia Tech lacrosse standout was selected by the Baltimore Ride with the 17th pick of the United Women’s Lacrosse League supplemental draft over the weekend. The Lewes, Delaware native will be the first Tech alum to play in the UWLX which was founded in 2016.

Bartley played attack for the Hokies from 2012-2015 earning 63 starts in 67 appearances. She finished her career with 113 goals, the eighth-most in program history to go along with 21 assists for 134 points.

The UWLX is a four-team league with franchises in Boston, Long Island, Philadelphia and Baltimore that compete in a 10-week season from May to August.

Basketball tickets on sale

Season ticket packages for the upcoming men’s basketball season are set to go on sale to the public through the Virginia Tech Athletics Ticket Office beginning Thursday, Oct. 5. Fewer than 1,000 season tickets remain following Hokie Club and returning season ticket holder pre-purchase.

Tiered season ticket pricing returns this season. There is limited availability remaining in the “High Post” ($475), “Top of the Key” ($400) and “Beyond the Arc” ($220) price levels. The “High Post” and “Top of the Key” require Hokie Scholarship Fund donations in addition to the ticket price. “The Paint” option ($550) sold out during Hokie Club and returning season ticket holder purchasing opportunities.

Based on availability, the following mini plans could be offered later this month. Fans wishing to purchase season tickets may do so by visiting HokieTickets.com.

McGlynn defensive player of week

Virginia Tech women’s soccer goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, for the week ending October 1.

McGlynn, a sophomore from Jacksonville, Florida, played all 110 minutes en route to her fifth shutout of the season in a 0-0 double-overtime draw with Boston College. McGlynn recorded a career-high 11 saves on a night in which the Eagles peppered the Hokie defense with 22 shots for the game. Her 11 saves also rank tied for second on this season’s ACC’s single-game saves lists, and she stands second in the league with 54 saves this season. McGlynn owns 10 career shutouts in just 28 career matches at Virginia Tech.

Hokie Hoop Madness

The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s basketball teams will host “Hokie Hoops Madness” on Friday, Oct. 20 at 9 p.m., to celebrate last season’s successes and bring basketball entertainment to Blacksburg before the start of the regular season. The event will take place at the Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum.

Both the men’s and the women’s teams will participate in the event. Activities will include the unveiling of post-season banners for both teams and the men’s team will be awarded their NCAA Tournament rings. Fans will also get a chance to see the new, redesigned playing court and sit in the new seating, installed in the coliseum during the summer.

Entertainment for the event, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be provided by D.J. TMMPO, along with the Marching Virginians’ drumline. There will be shooting and skills contests with fan participation in selected contests. This will be fans first opportunity to see the teams before they open their seasons on Nov. 10.
