TubaChristmas calls all tuba and euphonium players for Blacksburg’s Winter Lights Festival Dec. 1

Tuba and euphonium players of all ages and abilities participate in Blacksburg TubaChristmas event.

Tis the season for wooly earmuffs and plastic mouthpieces, TubaChristmas is calling for all tuba and euphonium players to participate the Blacksburg TubaChristmas event.


“Bring your tubas, euphoniums and all of your friends to downtown Blacksburg on Blacksburg Winter Lights Festival Friday, December 1st, 2017,” the sponsoring Town of Blacksburg press release said.

In its 42nd year, TubaChristmas events, are held in communities throughout the nation. In tribute to the instruments and the composers who have embraced them, the effort is dedicated to developing, expanding, and preserving the music arts.

“All ages and ability levels participate,” Betsy Crone, the Virginia Tech flautist helping promote the event.

“We usually have about 50 to 65 performers. You show up, read through the music, which is an easy book of Christmas Carols, eat pizza, and perform for a crowd! Fun, easy. Dress warmly!” she said.

Registration is $10 at 3:45 to 4:15pm Squires Virginia Tech, Department of Music, Room. 243. A rehearsal follows at 4:15 to 5:15pm, then a break and pizza dinner, hot chocolate, coffee for the musicians.

The performance itself will be held from 6pm to 7pm, on Henderson Lawn Square. Warm dress and plastic mouthpieces are recommended.

Chairs will be provided as needed.

“Join in the fun as the town celebrates with the annual lighting of the tree, parade, and Farmer’s Market happenings,” the press release said.

Parking is available at Kent Square Parking Garage, 207 Draper Rd, TubaChristmas hats and/or scarves – $20.00, Music ‘Carols for a Merry TubaChristmas – $20.00, and commemorative buttons – $5.00 will be on offer.

TubaChristmas is sponsored by Downtown Blacksburg, Inc,, The School of Performing Arts Music, Theatre, Cinema and the Marching Virginians at Virginia Tech.
