Katie Loichinger proudly displays the the generous array of books donated to the Radford Elf Shelf by Barnes and Noble in Christiansburg this year.

The Radford Elf Shelf, the entirely volunteer organization whose mission it is to “offer dignified Christmas assistance to low income families in Radford” partners again with the Barnes and Noble bookstore in Christiansburg to provide books for children.

“We ask our customers if they’d like to buy a book for a child. We chose Little Golden Books this year. Everyone comes and says, ‘Oh this was my favorite!’,” Katie Loichinger, Barnes and Noble Christiansburg manager, said.

With a goal of 1000 books, the bookstore has collected nearly 850.

“We enjoy being able to partner with a community local organization like the Elf Shelf to give the gift of reading,” Loichinger said.

The Radford Elf Shelf provides gifts for children, newborn to 18 years-old as well as food vouchers.

“This donation ensures that each child who receives gifts from the Elf Shelf will also receive at least one book. Many thanks to this local merchant,” Nancy Kent, communications person for the Radford Elf Shelf said.
