Concord to host multiple basketball camps
The Concord University women’s basketball team has announced dates for three summer camps
The program will host its annual high school team shootout June 16. The cost per team will be $175 and $300 for those wanting to bring a junior varsity squad. Each team will be guaranteed a minimum of three games.
On June 2, Concord will host an elite camp at the Carter Center. Elite campers will train in the same environment that the Mountain Lion basketball players participate in on a daily basis. Games will be played to allow the campers to showcase their talent for the Concord coaching staff. The camp will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the cost being $50.
On June 25-28, the women’s basketball program will hold a kids’ day camp for girls entering third grade up to rising eighth graders. The camp will run from 4-8 p.m. each day. This camp is designed to give experience of fundamentals and basketball training by our college coaching staff. Topics such as shooting, passing, dribbling, and defense will be included throughout the day. Registration for this camp will be $75 before May 25 and $100 after the early deadline.

Hokies add Bucknell transfer
Head coach Tony Robie announced Monday the addition of Tom Sleigh, a 197-pound graduate transfer from Bucknell, to the Virginia Tech wrestling program.
Sleigh was a three-time NCAA qualifier and three-time EIWA place winner who racked up 89 wins in three seasons with the Bison. The DuBois, Pa., native will have one year of eligibility remaining and is eligible to compete for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
As a true freshman, Sleigh went 30-18 at 184 pounds and earned an automatic berth to nationals with a fifth-place finish at the EIWA Championships. After going to 2-2 at NCAAs as a sophomore, Sleigh bumped up to 197 pounds as a junior in 2016-17 where he earned a second-place finish at EIWAs and qualified for the national tournament for the third time.
Sleigh was able to retain his final year of eligibility after suffering an injury in the first dual of the 2017-18 season. The two-time EIWA All-Academic selection received his undergraduate degree in environmental studies.
RU adds Carico
Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Brent Chumbley has announced the addition of thrower Lexy Carico to the Radford Track & Field team.
Working with Coach Kali Slaydon at Patrick County High School, Carico put together a long list of achievements in her four years as a Cougar. Serving as a team captain since her freshman year, many people saw her potential from the start.
Specializing mainly in the discus throw, Carico placed fourth in Virginia and 30th in the nation in the event during the 2016 season before getting the results from her hard work and winning the state championship in 2017. She finished 13th in the nation that year.
The PCHS record books heavily feature her name – she owns the discus record with a throw of 42.43 meters (139’2.5″) and the indoor shot put record at 10.83 meters (35’6.5″).
