A hospital was established on the campus of Christiansburg Institute around 1918. Serving the African American population during segregation, the hospital was organized with an interracial board of directors.
Dr. A. M. Showalter, who operated the Altamont Hospital for the white population, provided assistance for the project. (This photo is from the D. D. Lester Collection. This image and many more are available from the Montgomery Museum & Lewis Miller Regional Art Center.)
