The New River Squares are holding an open house and free lesson for Western Square Dancing on Aug. 27 at the Memorial Baptist Church at 995 Pepper’s Ferry Road in Pulaski.
No reservation is necessary. A series of beginner classes will be held on Mondays, 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Church starting Sept. 10.
“Square dancing provides low-impact physical exercise, stress reduction, mental activity and socialization while you are having fun on the dance floor. It is guaranteed that when the music starts you will not be able to sit still!” Sharon Eifried, dancer and communications officer of the group wrote in an announcement.
The group has been around since the ‘70s dancing at the YMCA, the NRCC and now at the church.
No special square dance attire is required. The New River Squares gather most Monday evenings at the Memorial Baptist Church to enjoy dancing. Many say square dancing is like walking to lively, upbeat music Eifried wrote.
The group danced one evening at the NRV Fair this year in Dublin to demonstrate square dance and they are scheduled to perform at the Montgomery Museum Heritage Day (Pepper Rd. Christiansburg) on August 25.
“Guests of all ages and all skill levels are welcome. The square dance caller is Walt Leftwich, a caller with 40 years of experience, who hails from Mt. Airy, North Carolina.”
The group also line dances under the leadership of Walt’s wife, Linda. Four or five times a year the club sponsors a dance with a guest caller for square dancing and a cuer for round dancing.
Some of the members of the New River Squares have been dancing for three months, some for one year and others for longer. Everyone looks forward to warmly welcoming newcomers to the group.
If this sounds like fun to you, then come on over!
