Auburn High School, the defending Class 1 state golf champion, finished second earlier this week in the Mt. Empire District Tournament held at the Wytheville Golf Course. George Wythe took the team title, finishing 32-strokes ahead of the Eagles.
George Wythe shot a 289, while Auburn finished with a 321. Galax was third at 340 and Grayson County fourth at 342.
George Wythe’s Daniel Goode was the tournament winner with a 71. Jentzen Gore was the top individual Auburn golfer with a 74. Carter Vance shot a 75, Austin Kirtner an 83 and Slater Linkous an 89. Both GW and Auburn advance to the Class 1 Region C and state tournaments.
In Class 3, Region D play at the Draper Valley Golf Course on Tuesday, Christiansburg (352) finished a distant seventh as Abingdon took the team championship with a 284. Hidden Valley was second at 292 and Lord Botetrout third at 316.
Christiansburg’s Seth Walker shot a 75 and qualified as an individual for next week’s Class 3 state tournament scheduled at the Williamsburg National Golf Club.
Both the Class 1 and Class 4 west regional matches were postponed until next week because of rain.
