Willis, Floyd earn ACC honors
Following Virginia Tech’s 31-14 victory over No. 22 Duke on Saturday night, Ryan Willis and Reggie Floyd have been named ACC Players of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Willis collected quarterback of the week honors and Reggie Floyd earned defensive back of the week accolades after two impressive individual performances in the victory in Durham.
Willis (6-4, 223) completed 17 of 27 passes for 332 yards and three touchdowns against the Blue Devils. The Overland Park, Kansas native made his first start since 2016 when he was a signal caller for Kansas. The redshirt junior threw for the most passing yards since at least 1987 for a Tech quarterback in his first start. His three touchdowns of 27, 67 and 10 yards set a new career high.
Floyd (6-0, 222) tallied eight tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception and one pass breakup in his 16th career start for the Hokies. The Manassas, Virginia native’s 2.5 tackles for loss set a new career high, while his first interception of the season and fourth of his career set up a Brian Johnson field goal that gave Tech an early 3-0 lead.
Harris commits to Tech
One of the top basketball players in the Commonwealth is coming to Virginia Tech. 6-4 190-pound Anthony Harris was rated the number 74 high school senior in the nation. He averaged 18 points per game this past season for Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax and had been recruited by Wake Forest and Duke.
McGlynn ACC player of week
Announced today by the Atlantic Coast Conference, Virginia Tech junior goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn has been tabbed the ACC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, while North Carolina sophomore forward Alessia Russo picked up this week’s Offensive Player of the Week honor.
This is the second ACC Defensive Player of the Week honor this year for McGlynn, as she earned the first on Aug. 21 after the season-opening weekend.
It’s the third of her career, as she was once named last year (ironically) on Oct. 3. Before the season, McGlynn was selected to the 2018 Preseason All-ACC Women’s Soccer Team, as announced by the league and voted on by the conference’s coaches.
With today’s selection, McGlynn becomes the first Tech women’s soccer player ever to earn two “player of the week” honors in the same season, regardless of conference, while the three in her career match her for the most ever, as well, regardless of league.
UNC tipoff set
Virginia Tech’s game at North Carolina on October 13 will kick off at 7 p.m. ET and will be televised to a national audience on either ESPN2 or ESPNU. The telecasting network will be determined following Tech’s tonight’s contest against Notre Dame.
RU heritage collection
The Radford Athletics department, in conjunction with the Radford University Alumni Association, announced today the upcoming reveal and release of new vintage inspired logos for merchandise in 2018.
Full details and purchasing information for the “heritage collection” will be officially released on Monday, October 8, just weeks before Radford University’s homecoming celebration is set to begin.

Tolbert honored with award
Virginia Tech volleyball’s Jaila Tolbert was selected as one of 30 volleyball student-athletes to the 2018 Senior CLASS Award, as announced by the organization Monday afternoon.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Tolbert has been the definition of a student-athlete on and off the court for the Hokies since her arrival to Blacksburg in 2015. An International Studies major with a concentration in business and Chinese minor, Tolbert has earned a spot on the ACC Academic Honor Roll and the Virginia Tech Athletic Director’s Honor Roll each year, as well as making the 2017 ACC Volleyball All-Academic Team.
Robie contract extended
Coming off of leading the Virginia Tech wrestling program to its second consecutive ACC title and its sixth straight top-10 finish at the NCAA championships, head coach Tony Robie has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him in Blacksburg through 2022-23. The deal includes a one-year rollover option for 2023-24.
Robie took the reins of the program on an interim basis in time for the 2017 postseason before earning the head coaching job just one week after the conclusion of the season. Since then, he has continued the ascension of the program that he helped restore back in 2006 when he first came to Blacksburg.
