The Montgomery Museum will host an art talk and wine tasting featuring art-history writer Scott Crawford entitled “The Girl I Left Behind Me: Depictions of Women on the Home front 1800-1945” Friday at the Great Road on Main (100 W. Main St., formerly Main Street Baptist Church) in Christiansburg.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for wine and hors d’oeuvres and the talk begins at 7 p.m.
“When we think of war, we tend to think of, mostly, men clad in uniform, armed with the most advanced weaponry available, engaged in combat, relying on the tactics in vogue at that time,” Crawford writes, “However, for the vast majority of soldiers, their loved ones remained at home tending to the home front.”
Artists have not ignored this arena as they have grappled with war and the impact of war on society.
“Loving, haunting, uplifting and moving depictions of the home front have graced their canvases leaving viewers with not only emotions but thoughtful topics and themes on which to reflect,” he writes.
Join B. Scott Crawford as he explores a host of paintings and prints from 1800-1945 depicting women, children, and others who remained at home while their loved ones fought their nations’ enemies on fields and oceans covering the globe.
Scott comes to history writing and presentation as a credit union-industry executive, developing new curriculum that allowed for a humanities and arts-based approach to business training.
This unique method earned him Member One national recognition with the Excellence in Employee Engagement Award. In addition to his work in the credit union industry, he brings about 25 years of experience in education having served as a high school and college level history instructor, social studies coordinator, and a director of education for a fine arts museum.
A graduate of Old Dominion University, Scott earned a master’s degree in history and remains active researching a host of themes related to works of art and history so much so, that, in 2013, the National gallery of Art, Washington, D. C. officially changed the title of a 19th century painting in its gallery as a result of Scott’s research.
