Two local churches are seeking volunteers to help serve and greet on Thanksgiving Day.

Grove United Methodist Church (1020 Tyler Ave.) in Radford needs volunteers to serve meals, greet visitors, wash dishes and pack meals to go.

“This is our 11th or 12th year,” Susan Lesko, co-chair of the missions committee said. “ On Thanksgiving, the church serves about 250 meals to people who dine at the church, even more to people who receive delivered holiday meals. 150 deliveries.

“We originally started this meal to serve the community at large to people who may be alone on Thanksgiving, who may be looking for fellowship and company, but we found there was a great need for people who are shut-in and can’t come to the church,” Lesko said.

The Grove United Methodist mission committee, which is the arm responsible for ministry to the community, hosts fundraisers throughout the year, recently working with the nonprofit Rise against Hunger, to eliminate world hunger by 2030.

“We packaged in 10,160 meals in 2.5 hours,” Lesko said. “Proceeds go to local missions like Women’s Resource Center, Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread and Beans and Rice. To volunteer, call (540) 639-2807.

St. Michael Lutheran Church (2308 Merrimac Road) in Blacksburg is also seeking volunteers for Thanksgiving tomorrow.

To volunteer there, call (540) 951-8951 or email
