The Virginia Tech Athletics Department and the Atlantic Coast Conference announced the Hokies’ 2019 football schedule on Wednesday.
For the second consecutive season, the Hokies will have seven games at Lane Stadium, including three contests in September and a Friday conference game against Duke on Sept. 27.
“We are excited to once again have seven home games at Lane Stadium in 2019,” head Coach Justin Fuente said. “Opening the season on the road at Boston College will be a challenge, but I know our squad will embrace the opportunity. I know how much our team appreciates the support of our fans wherever we play. We look forward to seeing Hokie Nation out in force in Blacksburg and on the road in 2019.”
The Hokies will open the 2019 campaign on the road against Boston College on Saturday, Aug. 31. Last season, Tech also opened on the road against an ACC opponent, knocking off Florida State by a 24-3 margin in Tallahassee. This season marks the first time that the Hokies will open with ACC teams in back-to-back campaigns since taking on Clemson in the first games of the 1987 and 1988 seasons. It will also be Tech’s first game played in August since a 34-9 win over William & Mary on August 30, 2014. The Hokies last opened the year against Boston College in 1995.
Tech will then play host to a three-game homestand at Lane Stadium beginning with Old Dominion on Sept. 7 and followed by Furman on Sept. 14. The Hokies will enjoy an open date on Sept. 21 before the club’s ACC home opener against Duke on Friday, Sept. 27. Tech owns a 3-0 record against the Blue Devils under Fuente.
A road trip to Miami on Oct. 5 will precede a home date with Rhode Island on Oct. 12 and an ACC Coastal Division contest with North Carolina on Oct. 19. Tech’s game with URI will be the first meeting between the two since they initially squared off in 1980. The Hokies also own a 3-0 record against the Tar Heels under Fuente.
The Hokies will enjoy a second open date on Oct. 26 before traveling to Notre Dame on Nov. 2. Tech’s initial trip to Notre Dame Stadium saw the Hokies erase a pair of 17-point deficits to come away with the 34-31 win. Tech will welcome Wake Forest to Lane Stadium for the first time since 2010 on Nov. 9 before traveling to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech on Nov. 16.
Tech’s 2019 home slate will conclude with a Senior Day showdown against Pitt on Nov. 23. The Hokies will then seek to extend their streak of dominance in the Commonwealth Cup series against Virginia with a visit to Charlottesville on Friday, Nov. 29. Tech’s 15-game winning streak over the Cavaliers is the longest active streak between a pair of in-state FBS rivals and is the third-longest active winning streak in a series featuring a pair of Power Five programs.
