Last Tuesday, Phase I of the MCPS redistricting plan proposed moving 152 students from overcrowded Christiansburg Primary and Christiansburg Elementary schools to less crowded schools. That proposal was met by concern from parents about school buses traveling on I-81.
An update on redistricting will be presented next week at the board’s Feb. 19 meeting. Options trying to address travel on the interstate will be presented.
Approval of a redistricting plan is scheduled for March 5.
Moving these students will not alleviate crowding at the schools. Phase II recommendations addressing future capacity challenges at those two schools and at Christiansburg High School will be presented in early April.
The school board will vote on a redistricting plan on May 7.
School board meetings are regularly scheduled on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. The first meeting of the month is held at the County Government Center, 755 Roanoke Street in Christiansburg. The second meeting of the month is held at the School Board Office, 750 Imperial Street in Christiansburg.
