Running over the allowed six months since being referred from the planning commission, the rezoning of the 21-acre Old Blacksburg Middle School property (501 S. Main St.) has gone back to the commission for another public hearing to be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 300 S. Main St. The public is invited to speak.
Last September, following public hearings in which the town residents, businesses and homeowners were heavily engaged, the planning commission recommended the rezoning to the town council. Since then, the town and the developer, Midtown Redevelopment Partners, LLC, have not been able to negotiate agreement involving public dollar investment in construction and ownership of a parking garage and public spaces. The loss of an anchor tenant last fall also changed the frontage design.
