One of Mike Young’s top basketball recruits at Wofford is headed to Elon University. Zac Ervin announced Tuesday he chose Elon after being given his release by Wofford following Young’s hiring at Virginia Tech.
Speculation had run rampant that Ervin would join Young in Blacksburg, but the 6-foot 5 shooting guard narrowed his choices to Wofford, Appalachian State, East Tennessee State, Furman and Elon.
Ervin helped lead Gate City to the Region 3D title game before losing to Radford High School. He was named the Class 2 All-State Player of the Year and finished with 2,351 career points.
Elon competes in the Colonial Athletic Conference. Ervin had offers from 30 colleges before making his final choice.
Meanwhile, on the football side of the world, Virginia Tech kicker Adam Stout remains in the transfer portal where he recently received an offer from Penn State.
The Atlantic Coast Conference has agreed to another bowl game affiliation and Boston’s Fenway Park will host a new bowl game starting in 2020.
Fenway Park will be the third Major League Baseball stadium to currently host a bowl game, joining the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium and the Cheez-It Bowl at the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Chase Field according to Brett McMurphy, a Stadium College Football Insider writer.
In another basketball side note, Radford University’s loss is Virginia Tech’s gain. All-Big South women’s basketball player 6-2 Lydia Rivers has announced plans to transfer to Tech.
This past season, she averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Highlanders. She also averaged 8.1 boards in Big South play, ranking her fifth in the country, while blocking 53 shots.
Rivers’ father played football and basketball at Tech in the late 80s.
The former Highlander is the second big-time transfer to announce plans to join the Hokie program.
Six foot three forward Asiah Jones could be eligible immediately after playing two years at the PAC-12 school. In addition, JUCO product Alex Obouh Fegue is transferring from Eastern Florida.
All this height will also include 5-star 6 foot 5 recruit Elizabeth Kitley from Summerfield, North Carolina, who led Northwest Guilford to two state titles, and was named a 4A State Tournament MVP in 2017 and 2018. She has also been recognized as an AP 4A All-State team member each of the past two seasons and was included in USA Today’s North Carolina first team in 2018.
Obouh Fegue, who is already on campus, averaged 16.2 points and 9.8 rebounds during the 2017-18 season, leading the Titans to a 24-7 record and a runner-up finish in the FCSAA State Tournament Championship. Obouh Fegue was named a D1 All-America honorable mention by the National Junior College Athletic Association.
