In collaboration with high school students, Blacksburg Regional Arts Association has adorned the grounds of the Alexander Black House (204 Draper Rd) in Blacksburg. As part of their Public Arts efforts, members Diane Relf, Dave Angle, Susan Lockwood, Paula Golden and her daughter, Kate Golden, friends and supporters created more than 120 glass flowers to surround the Alexander Black House Museum and Cultural Center.
The flowers are glass discs bobbing with surprising delicacy on re-bar stakes in the house’s garden beds.
The artists worked with Michael Collver and his robotics students at Blacksburg High School to fabricate the stems and sepals giving students the opportunity to apply industrial tools to art. They welded, bent and shaped rebar, used computer design in CNC plasma cutting , gluing metal to glass, and working with community artists.
