Freddie Black Olinger, 81, of Blacksburg, VA passed away on May 2, 2019. He was born on October 4, 1937 to the late Rachel Hancock. Freddie was a 1955 graduate of Blacksburg High School. Upon graduation, he worked at the Cloverdale Cement Plant. He and Helen Gallagher were married in September 1957. After working at Kroger for 43 years, Freddie retired in 1999. He married Gail Boardman in 1988.

As a young man, Freddie enjoyed playing football and baseball. He belonged to the Old Timer’s Sportsmen Club since it began in 1973. He told many stories about fishing, hunting, horseback riding, harvesting wheat, working with his grandfather, Harvey, picking more berries than he thought could grow for his grandmother, Sara, digging wells and basements for neighboring homes and many other of his experiences. Freddie could tell some pretty tall tales that would keep everyone guessing.

Freddie and his friends could talk for hours about the old days and past good times. He always enjoyed seeing the many Kroger customers that he knew throughout the years. Freddie also spent time watching baseball and Tech football, camping on the New River, working around his home, being with his children and grandchildren, and vacationing at the beach with family.

Freddie is survived by his wife, Gail; his daughter, Joan Olinger; two grandsons, Cody Beach, Dillon Olinger of Powhatan, VA; step-daughters, Heather and husband, Mark Kaifer of Perry Hall, MD, Kristina and husband, Jeff Livasy of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Jessica and husband, Ryan Schmidt of Apex, NC. He also leaves seven step-grandchildren, Drew and Lillian Kaifer, Grayson and Luke Livasy, Evelyn, Cole and Reid Schmidt. Freddie was preceded in death by his son, Michael, who passed away in 2012.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 11 a.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Tucker LaForce officiating. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. The family received friends Monday evening at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
