Christiansburg High School has a new girls’ basketball coach. This week, athletic director Tim Cromer announced Christene Cox as the new face on the sidelines after a three-month search.
The Floyd County graduate was chosen from three finalists.
Cox was part of two state championships in both basketball and softball. Previously, she coached both basketball and softball at Floyd County High School. Most recently, she served as head jayvee basketball and softball coach at the school.
“I applied for this job because sports have been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I have just recently moved to Christiansburg, so it was kind of fate for this position. I hope to be able to pass on my knowledge of the game to the Christiansburg program and help these girls be the best they can be,” she said.
The Christiansburg program has had four coaches in the past six years and has advanced to the state regional playoffs in 2017 and 2018. Cox is married to CHS assistant basketball coach Kenneth Cox and graduated from North Greenville University and currently works as the head of sales for New River Polymers.
Cox is optimistic about her new role and the program. “I believe that we can build it up to be one of the best in the area with the right amount of work and time,” she said.
The new coach plans to meet with players and parents in the upcoming week and hit the ground running. The team is holding open gym over the next week and has entered into the Fall Spectrum League that starts Sept. 9.
“I’m very eager to get started and looking forward to the season,” Cox concluded. Christiansburg will have to regroup after losing two starters to graduation and another to transfer. The team finished last season at 20-5 and has won 38 games over the past two years.
