Celebrated NASA astronaut and National Geographic author Terry Virts will share his unique stories and stunning photographs taken from a place many will never visit — space. “View from Above” with Terry Virts comes to the Moss Arts Center on Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
Part of National Geographic’s touring speaker series, National Geographic Live, the event will be held in the center’s Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, located within the Street and Davis Performance Hall at 190 Alumni Mall.
As a NASA astronaut, pilot of the space shuttle Endeavour, and crew member on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft, Virts spent 200 consecutive days in space as commander of the International Space Station — one of the longest continuous space missions of any NASA astronaut.
More recently, Virts appeared in the 2016 IMAX film “A Beautiful Planet,” a breathtaking portrait of Earth from space that features stunning footage — much of it shot by Virts while aboard (and outside) the International Space Station — of our magnificent blue planet and humanity’s impact on it.
His photography, which provides incredible aerial views of Earth and the vast space that surrounds it, is featured in the National Geographic book, “VIEW FROM ABOVE: An Astronaut Photographs the World.”
With a broad roster of talent, including renowned photographers, scientists, authors, filmmakers and adventurers, National Geographic Live’s critically acclaimed programs have connected with audiences worldwide for over a century.
Prior to the performance, attendees may interact with an open exhibition in the Moss Arts Center Grand Lobby that explores how Virginia Tech researchers are contributing to the understanding of the universe. The exhibition features work by the Center for Space Science and Engineering Research (Space@VT).
Tickets are $25 for general admission and $10 for students and youth 18 and under. Tickets can be purchased online; at the Moss Arts Center’s box office, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; or by calling 540-231-5300 during box office hours.
