On March 5, 2020, the Montgomery Museum of Art and History will open its first student art exhibit of the year. Featured will be work from students at Blacksburg High School.
To celebrate the opening and to honor the student artists and welcome the public, the museum will host a reception that is free and open to the public on March 5 from 5-7 p.m. The exhibit will be up throughout March and will be followed by another installment of student art in April.
Students of all grades, disciplines, and class levels, including Art 1, Art 2, ceramics, painting, drawing, and AP Art will be involved in the show. The variety of artists and mediums should create an elegant and exciting array of pieces that will provide visitors a fully rounded exhibit.
Blacksburg High School art instructor Geoff Rowland previewed the exhibit. “So far, we will have oil paintings, pencil drawings, works in clay, ink drawings, and at least one digital art piece in the show,” he said. The artwork collection will be installed for the exhibit by members of the Blacksburg High School National Art Honor Society.
In addition to displaying the students’ art, the Montgomery Museum is hosting an art competition in which participating students are automatically entered. Members of the Blacksburg Regional Art Association will judge the event, which should further a rewarding relationship between the aspiring young artists of Blacksburg High School BHS and the talented older, more experienced artists in the New River Valley. Winners of the competition will be awarded prizes by the judges.
Rowland said he believes the Blacksburg High School student art exhibit will provide a “great opportunity for students to show the public the results of many hours of hard work and practice.”
The museum is located at 300 S. Pepper Street, Christiansburg.
