Two Hokies named ACC all-academic

The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team’s Landers Nolley II and Nahiem Alleyne have earned a spot on the 2020 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men’s Basketball team.
Nolley, a redshirt freshman from Atlanta, earns the honor for the first time in his second year of studying public health. During his redshirt season last year, he made the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
Alleyne, a freshman from Buford, Ga., also earns the honor for the first time. He is currently enrolled in human development in his first year at Tech.
Nolley is averaging 15.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game for the Hokies,  and Alleyne is averaging 9.4 points and 2.4 rebounds a contest.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

 

Concord men third in first meet

The Concord University men’s track and field team started its outdoor season by placing third at the Golden Eagle Invite at Laidley Field Friday afternoon. CU tallied 71 points in the meet.
Senior Jason Weitzel won both the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs to lead the Mountain Lions.
The Athens, WVa., native was part of five Concord athletes who finished in the top 10 of each event. Weitzel clocked a time of 2:02.48. Junior Raheem Williams was the runner-up in the 800 meters as he ran a 2:06.01. Sophomore Cedric Drennen was third with a showing of 2:07.68. Fellow sophomore Isaac Prather followed in sixth in a time of 2:08.92. Junior Samuel Haynes came through in 2:13.24 to finish 10th.
Drennen was the runner-up in the 1,500-meters as he clocked in at 4:15.82. Prather ran a 4:16.22 to place third. Freshman Alex Watty  of Christiansburg finished in sixth place as he clocked a time of 4:24.82. Fellow freshman Nate Leichner , also from Christiansburg, crossed in tenth place as he stopped the timer at 4:26.10.

 

RU golf ties for third

The Radford men’s golf team finished in a tie for third place at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Sunday, The Highlanders shot a team score of 298 in the final round.
Peter Gasperini led the Highlanders and earned his second straight top-10 finish after shooting a final-round score of 74. Patrick Gareiss also earned a top-20 finish, closing the tournament with a 4-over 75 to finish tied for 14th.
Tyler Hull shot a 3-over 74 to slide into the top 20, finishing the tournament tied for 19th. Hunter Duncan finished just outside the top 20 in a tie for 21st at 16-over. Nicholas Taliaferro finished tied for 27th at 17-over. All five of Radford’s players finished inside the top 30 and the top half of the tournament field.
