Virginia Tech track and field throws Coach Andrew Dubs has been selected as the head coach for the United States National Team for the 31st Summer World University Games in Chengdu, China, in 2021.
Since taking over the throws group in July of 2017, Dubs has
elevated a historically strong event group. On top of helping the Virginia Tech track and field teams win three ACC titles, Dubs became a part of NCAA history in 2019 when he became just the fourth coach to have two women (Pavla Kuklova 65.78m and
Emma Thor 65.32m) throw over 65 meters in the hammer throw in the same season.
Dubs will be responsible for putting together a staff and a team that will look to bring medals back to the United States.

“I am extremely humbled and honored to have been selected to represent the United States as the head coach of the track and field team at the 2021 World University Games,” Dubs said. “This is an opportunity that I am extremely excited about. I am eager to put together a staff and a team that will allow us to contend for the podium and bring home medals to the United States.
“I would like to thank USA Team President Dan Guerrero, and Deputy Head Nels Hawkinson, for their time and efforts in leading this search and selection process
,” Dubs said. “I look forward to not only representing our great country but also representing Virginia Tech and all of Hokie Nation on the world stage.”
The event begins with the opening ceremony on August 18, 2021, and will
end on Aug. 29.
The World University Games are organized by the International University Sports Federation and held every other year. The event features 18 sports
and is open to men and women between the ages of 17 and 24 who are currently or have been in the past year a student at a college or university.
