The Virginia Tech police department has announced the passing of longtime officer Geof Allen. In 2009, he received the university’s 2009 President’s Award for Excellence, which is presented annually to up to five Virginia Tech staff employees who have made extraordinary contributions by consistent excellence in the performance of their job or a single incident, contribution, or heroic act.
Allen was a 20-year-plus employee of the university and a recipient of the police department’s Medal of Valor, the highest honor it bestows. He founded the Virginia Tech Student Police Academy in 2004 to provide students with insight into the law while teaching them effective crime prevention strategies.
In the past, he had also served as the department’s community outreach office. Alen also created the police department’s website and served as its webmaster. He has co-written and produced three emergency action and preparedness presentations tailored to the needs of faculty and staff, students, and visitors.
In a statement, the VT police department said it was hard to find the right words following the sudden death of their brother. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Geof’s family and loved ones at this time,” the department said in a released statement. “The Virginia Tech Police Department is thankful for the community’s overwhelming support and their celebration of Geof’s life. A dedicated officer who brought light to many in our community, Geof will be missed.”
Funeral arrangements are still pending.
