BLACKSBURG – A man is dead after firing on officers following a welfare check at a residence on Yellow Sulphur Road in Blacksburg on Friday.

According to the Virginia State Police, Bureau of Criminal Investigation (Salem Division), which is investigating the incident at the request of the Blacksburg Police Department, the shooting occurred Friday, Aug. 26, in the 3000 block of Yellow Sulpher Road in Blacksburg.

“The incident began at approximately 2 a.m. when Blacksburg Police Department received a

call for a welfare check at the residence,” the Virginia State Police stated. “Officers from Blacksburg Police Department and deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene, and attempted to de-escalate the incident. The male subject at the residence was speaking with officers, when the subject went into the residence and returned with a firearm. The subject discharged the firearm at the officers, and the officers returned fire, striking the subject.”

Officers administered first aid, but Joshua David Amodeo, 29, of Blacksburg, died at the scene.

No officers or deputies were injured in the incident and it remains under investigation.

At the completion of the investigation, the Virginia State Police will turn the findings over to the

Blacksburg Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for adjudication.
