RADFORD – New River Valley residents participated in this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Bisset Park on Sunday, Nov. 5, raising more than $65,000 to support the care, support and research programs of the Alzheimer’s Association.

“We set our goal at $53,000 and it was no match for the community which has surpassed that amount with donations and support,” said Nikki Hicks, Walk Manager. “We are so proud of the top team, the young women of Sigma Kappa Epsilon Chi from Virginia Tech. They have raised $45,600 so far, putting them at number six in the nation among Sigma Kappa chapters participating in walks.”

Sigma Kappa is a national team in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and nationwide has raised over $1.3 million so far this year. Also in Virginia, the James Madison University Sigma Kappa chapter has raised over $36,000.

Sponsors of the Walk this year included Food City and English Meadows.

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease – a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In Virginia alone, there are more than 150,000 people living with the disease and 354,000 caregivers.

The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.  Since 1989, the Alzheimer’s Association mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk; now the Alzheimer’s Association is continuing to lead the way with Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
