The gathering of parents, students, neighbors, and community members in the fields beside Blacksburg High School that had been scheduled for today, will be postponed until Friday, April 20.
The demonstration organized by the community group One Voice was intended to mark a month since the shooting that killed 17 people at Parkland High School to protest inaction on school violence.
“The playing fields between Kipps Elementary School and the Blacksburg Middle School are not in good condition with [Monday’s] snow, and the organizers don’t want to cause any damage to the fields,” Michael Sutphin, a member of One Voice and a town council member, wrote in an email.
School walkouts throughout the country, including throughout the New River Valley, marking the Parkland shooting, are scheduled for 10 a.m. today, many holding a silent vigil for 17 minutes.
The new date, April 20, coincides with the national school walkout being organized around the country and the anniversary of Columbine Sutphin wrote.
