RADFORD – Radford Girl Scout Troop 1075 will be spending the next few months offering their hard work and hugs for pets that end up at the Radford Animal Shelter.

The older scouts in the troop, fourth and fifth graders called “junior scouts,” will be working at least 20 hours over the next several weeks in an effort to earn their bronze awards. Those scouts, who include Bria Clark, Cat Baker, Kayla Calfee and Ashley Whitlock, will be leading the younger girls in a variety of activities to help out the animal shelter.

Recently, Radford Animal Control Officer Adele Katrovitz brought her dog, William, whom she adopted from the shelter, to Carter Street United Methodist Church in Radford where the troop meets to “talk to the girls about the possibilities” with the shelter project, explained Calfee.

“Our troop is multi level, so all the girls will be helping,” said Calfee.  “Each of the juniors has to work at least 20 hours to earn the award.  Our plan is to have two pet drives to collect items for the sheltered animals. We will be collecting food, bedding, cat litter, etcetera. No dates are set yet, but we will have one at Walmart in Fairlawn and one at Petsmart in Christiansburg.”

“We also plan to make toys for the cats and homemade dog biscuits for the dogs,” she continued. “We will be touring the shelter in April and playing with, brushing, and walking the animals.”

“The girls are very excited about this project.”
