American Red Cross blood collections have been significantly disrupted by the severe storms that hit the Midwest and mid-Atlantic areas, including the New River Valley. More donations are critically needed and people who can give are being urged to do so now.

In fact, blood supplies were already at emergency levels with June blood donations coming in 50,000 fewer than expected. Because of that, the Red Cross recently issued a national blood appeal, and the latest round of storms may severely impact the ability to build the blood inventory back up to sufficient levels in many locations.

Here are local drives that are going on in and around Montgomery County and Radford.

Friday, June 6, 1-6 p.m., Lowes, Radford

Friday, July 6, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Blacksburg

Saturday, July 7, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Floyd United Methodist Church

Tuesday, July 10, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., New River Community College, contact Ben Kramer.

Call 1-800-Red Cross (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.
