The Town of Christiansburg is pleased to announce that Jim Lancianese has been promoted to director of public works.

Lancianese, who previously served as assistant director and has more than 30 years of experience in the industry, began his new position on Monday, Jan. 23.

Lancianese was hired by the Town of Christiansburg in May 2009 as a labor foreman. He was promoted in January 2010 to assistant superintendent of public works and later to superintendent in October 2013. In May 2016, he assumed the role of assistant director.

Prior to joining the Town, Lancianese spent 10 years as a superintendent at Spraker Construction in Radford. He also has experience as a field service technician for Caterpillar and a solid waste authority, as well as an equipment operator at a construction company.

Originally from West Virginia, Lancianese has remained committed to continuing his professional education throughout his career, receiving the Public Works Executive Management Certificate and the Advanced Safety Certificate from the National Safety Council. He’s completed several specialized courses on topics including municipal engineering, underground utilities, water tank maintenance, FEMA emergency management and winter preparations, among others.

“I am excited to continue my career with the Town of Christiansburg and take on this new role,” Lancianese said. “I may be biased, but I think I work with the best 100 men and women in the industry, and they consistently impress me with their knowledge, work ethic and competence. We enjoy working in this community every single day, and I look forward to continuing to improve our operations to better serve our residents.”

Town Manager Steve Biggs added, “In my first six months with the Town, Jim has impressed me on a regular basis. His transition in the past few weeks to co-interim public works director was smooth, and he proved he’s up for the job. He has a very diverse skill set and is a strong manager of people.  I believe our crew will prosper under his leadership and the citizens will be well served.”

Lancianese is taking over for Ricky Bourne, who left the Town in December 2016 after 17 years with the Public Works Department. Bourne moved to Marshville, North Carolina, where he is the public works director.

Lancianese will have a starting salary of $78,438.88.
