Fleming leads Bruins to boys regional indoor title

Blacksburg’s Christian D’Orgeix (53), Christiansburg’s Cooper Neeble (148), and Blacksburg’s Sid Nathella strain for the line in the 1000 m race at the 3A West Region meet. Nathella would place 4th overall, with D’Orgeix in 5th and Neeble in 7th.

Blacksburg’s Ben Fleming claimed both the 1600 and 3200 meters Friday in the 3A West indoor meet as the Bruins boys brought home another championship. They will now attempt to bring another state crown back to the New River Valley.

Last year, the boys team finished third in the state indoor meet, and won a state title in 2013

Christiansburg’s Hannah Allen cleared 4-08 in the high jump at the 3A West Region meet, finishing in a tie for 8th place overall.

In this year’s regional meet, Heritage finished second in the boys team hunt with 83 points, 13 behind Blacksburg. Broadway was third with 58 points, while Christiansburg would tie in fourth place with Turner Ashby.

Christiansburg’s Ethan Mills leads Blacksburg’s Elijah Hodges as the two rivals compete during the 4×800 relay anchor leg. Mills would hold on for the Blue Demon win (8:24.33), while the Bruins would place 3rd in the relay at the 3A West Region championship meet.

the Lady Bruins placed second (91) behind Western Albermarle (106). Heritage was third and Christiansburg a distant seventh.

Marin also placed third in the 1600 behind teammate Ailene Edwards. Annie Kay Combs was third in the 3200 behind Marin.

Blacksburg’s girls 1600 and 3200 relay teams would finish second in their respective events.

Christiansburg’s Zion Lewis placed third in the high jump, while the Blue Demon 3,200 relay team claimed the top finish outdueling Blacksburg at the line.

Blacksburg’s Ben Fleming took the 1600 m and 3200 m 3A West Region titles and was boys 3A West Runner of the Year for his efforts on Friday night at Liberty University.
