Martens, Gwendolyn Helton

Gwendolyn Helton Martens, age 82, of Blacksburg died, Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at Kroontje Health Care Center.


She was born in Goodman, Wisconsin on March 9, 1934 to the late Milo C. and Maude Woosencraft Helton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, David C. Martens and brother, Thomas Helton.

Gwendolyn retired as the Director of Nursing from Virginia Tech after 25 years of service. She was a member of the Blacksburg Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Jeffery D. Martens of Baltimore, Maryland, Bradley P. and Karen O. Martens of Blacksburg; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Allen Berg of Neenah, Wisconsin; brother, Donald Helton of Birmingham, Alabama; grandchildren, David J. Martens and Katelyn R. Martens, both of Blacksburg.

A memorial service will be conducted Monday, March 6, 2017 at 1 p.m. in the Blacksburg Baptist Church with the Dr. Tommy McDearis and Dr. Don McKinney officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Blacksburg Baptist Church or a charity of your choice.
