The Virginia Tech Police Department recently received information that off-campus residents searching for roommates are being targeted for an overpayment scheme.

This scam happens when a subject contacts the off campus resident in response to an online ad they have placed looking for a roommate. The subject indicates that they have sent the requested money but through some accident wrote the check out for an excessive amount. They encourage the off-campus resident to cash the check and to immediately refund the excess.

This is often but not exclusively requested in the form of a loadable gift card. Cash and checks can also be requested. Eventually, the resident learns that the check they received will not clear and is fraudulent.

Community members who receive a call they believe seems suspicious should contact the Virginia Tech Police Department at 231-6411.
