Alice Marie Akers Mattox, age 93, of Blacksburg passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 5, 2017, at Lewis Gale Hospital-Montgomery.


She was born in Montgomery County on June 14, 1923 to the late Oakley Lee and Maggie Akers. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, William (Bill) Thomas Mattox; and brothers, Melvin, Sidney, James and Frank Akers.

Marie was a loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed baking, gardening and helping her husband make baskets. A lifelong resident of Blacksburg, she worked at Roses, Electro Tech and Mount Tabor Nursery.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Ron Mattox (Diane), of Alexandria, Louisiana; Rick Mattox (Barbara), of Blacksburg; grandchildren, Brian Mattox (Mary Lee), Bill Mattox, Scott Mattox (Jessica), Katy Mattox, Paige Mattox, Peter Mattox and Molly Mattox; great-grandchild, Luke Mattox; brother and sister-in-law, Charlie and Jacque Akers, of Blacksburg; brothers-in-law, James H. Mattox (Tincie), of McCoy, and Daniel Mattox, of Salem, Indiana; sister-in-law, Marguerite Mattox, of Fruitland, Florida; special niece, Rosemary Ratcliffe, numerous nieces and nephews, and special friend, Brenda Caldwell.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 10, 2017 at 1 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Ansley and Rev. Don Sunshine officiating.

Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Christiansburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Blacksburg Rescue Squad 1300 Progress St. NW, Blacksburg, VA 24060.
