Veteran’s Appreciation Breakfast today

An appreciation breakfast for veterans will be held from 8-11 a.m. today at the VFW Post 5311, 490 High Street in Christiansburg.

A free breakfast for our veterans is our way of honoring their service to our country and our community. Veteran’s service representative will be available to answer questions. Sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5311, American Legion Post 59 and Marine Corps League Det. 1190.

Student art exhibit reception at Montgomery Museum Thursday

There will be a reception for an art exhibit by Christiansburg High School students at the Montgomery Museum from 5-7 p.m. Thursday. The event is free and open to the public. The museum is located at 300 S. Pepper St., Christiansburg.


Christiansburg Recreation Center hosting free wellness screenings Friday

Representatives from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) will be at the Christiansburg Recreation Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday for free wellness screenings.

Services provided and topics covered include: heart health, musculoskeletal screenings, BMI screenings, clinical preventative services, insect disease prevention, tobacco cessation and healthy skin.

NRV Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day April 8

Residents served by the New River Resource Authority are invited to participate in the region’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection event from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. April 8 at the Radford University Dedmon Center Parking Lot Z (Riverside). Questions regarding the types of materials accepted should be directed to your locality. In Radford, call 731-3631; in Pulaski, call 674-8720; in Giles, call 921-2499; in Dublin, call 674-4798; in Blacksburg call 961-1806; in Christiansburg, call 382-6128.

No commercial waste or commercial vehicles will be accepted as household hazardous waste. Instead, they will be accepted for document shredding and electronic waste. The New River Resource Authority will be accepting plastic bags and a Goodwill container will be on-site.


Blacksburg Newcomers’ Club meeting April 11

The Blacksburg Newcomers’ Club general meeting will be held from 9-11:30 a.m. at At this meeting, In Balance Yoga staff will discuss how practicing yoga can help to become more balanced, more mindful, healthier and happier.

There is no cost to attend the meeting, which will be held at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, 600 Prices Fork Road in Blacksburg. Free babysitting is available for pre-school children ages 6 months and older.

No matter how long you’ve lived in the area, since birth or you’ve just moved in, the Blacksburg Newcomers’ Club welcomes all residents of the New River Valley.

Membership dues are $25.00 a year and include participation in interest groups.

Meetings will be cancelled if Montgomery County Public Schools have a two hour delay or schools are closed. Please check the Montgomery County Public School weather related announcements at www.mcps.org


Hike for Hospice registration open until April 19

Online Pre-registration is open until April, 19 for the second annual Hike for Hospice. Only those who pre-register in advance are guaranteed an exclusive second annual NRV Hike for Hospice T-shirt.

The event will include hiking, games and live music. Lunch will provided by Heathwood Market Catering. Participants will have the option of choosing between three hike routes: easy/ADA accessible, moderate and advanced. Hikes will be led by Claytor Lake State Park rangers.

Adult pre-registration is $25, student pre-registration is $20, and a team (four or more) is $20. Fees will increase by $5 for day-of registration.
