Blacksburg boys, girls win West Regionals/Christiansburg boys, girls finish fourth in 3A meet

Both Christiansburg and Western Albemarle tried to make a meet of it during Friday’s 3A West region action, but when the dust cleared the Blacksburg boys and girls teams would claim the championship.

The Blacksburg boys’ outdistanced Heritage 95 to 64, while Christiansburg would finish fourth with 46 points. The Bruins rode the Cole Beck horse as won both the 100 and 200 meters. Ben fleming would also take the 1,600 and 3,200.

On the girls’ side of the track, Blacksburg would take the top five spots in the 3,200 meters and race to a 95 to 69 win over Fluvanna. Western Albermarle would be third with 62 points and Christiansburg fourth with 46 points.

Beck finished with a 10.58 in the 100 meters and teammate, Noah Ramsey finished fifth. Beck would record a time of 21.49 in the 200 meter dash.

Blacksburg’s Jack Packard was third in the boys’ 400 meter dash. Christiansburg’s Ethan Mills would bring home a regional championship in the 800 with Blacksburg’s Ethan Edwards third.

Fleming would finish first in the 1,600 with a time of 4:28.44, and a 9:34.04 in the 3,200 for both regional championships. Christiansburg’s Tyler Kuchan would finish second to Fleming in the 3,200 with Blacksburg’s Alistair Bushey fifth.

Thomas Coffey was third for Blacksburg in the boys’ 110 meter hurdles with teammate Ryan Stanaland in sixth. Coffeey was fourth in the 300 meter hurdles with Stanaland sixth.

The Blacksburg 4X400 relay team would finish first with Christiansburg second. The Blue Demons would then pick up second in the 4X800 meter relay event with Blacksburg second.

Christiansburg’s Zion Lewis would be third in the boys’ high jump with a leap of 6-0, and Jared Simpkins was third at a mark of 12-06.

Noah Ramsey was fifth in the boys’ long jump with Blacksburg teammate, Ransom Castleberry in sixth. Blacksburg’s Brad Shelton would finish third in the shotput.

Kaitlyn Wolfe won the girls’ 3,200 with a time of 10:57.74 with teammates, Ailene Edwards, Annie Kay Combs, Simonne Guenette and Sophia Link in tow.

Madison Padgett would finish fifth in the 100 meter dash and Oge Okoronkwo was seventh.

Adiah Gholston would pull a first in the 800 meters for Blacksburg, and Christiansburg’s Julia Moschella was third.

Blacksburg would take second, fourth and fifth in the 1,600 as Edwards was second, Link in fourth and Combs fifth.

Christiansburg would try to keep the team race close with 2-3-4 in the girls’ 100 meter hurdles with Kaylyn Cromer second, followed by Madison Padgett and Kendall Lewis. Blacksburg’s Stephanie Gardner would finish in sixth. Gardner would finish third in the 300 meter hurdle event.

The Blue Demons would take bragging rights in the girls’ 4X100 meter relay finishing second with Blacksburg third. But the Bruins would even the score with first in 4X400 relay. Christiansburg was fourth. Blacksburg would also take the 4X800 meter relay event.

Three Christiansburg jumpers would place in the high jump. Madison Padgett finished tied for second with a 5-0 mark, while Hannah Allen was fourth and Kendall Lewis sixth.

Two Bruins would place in the pole vault with Katie Gabbard third and Anna Kender fifth. Christiansburg’s Kaylyn Cromer would finish fourth in the long jump.

The teams will move onto the state meet later this week.
