Library Closed, July 2-4

The library will be closed in observance of the Independence Day holiday on Monday, July 3rd and Tuesday, July 4. We will reopen at our regular time on Wednesday, July 5. Have a safe and happy Independence Day!


‘Classy Glass’ Fine Glass Art and Jewelry Exhibit

Wednesday, July 5 – Monday, July 31, All Day at the Blacksburg Library. Kay Cook designs custom fused glass jewelry that sparks conversations and inspires the imagination. Kay has been fusing glass for over 15 years and presently studies with a master teacher in Florida. Her work can be viewed online and in galleries throughout Southwest Virginia.


Photography Exhibit, “Motherhood: A Crowning Achievement”

Wednesday, July 5 – Monday, July 31, all day at the Blacksburg Library. Laura Swift, a grammie with a giggle, is a retired labor and delivery nurse currently working as a professional documentary birth photographer in Southwest VA. Her personal project, Motherhood: A Crowning Achievement is a manifestation of her hope that moms would begin to see and understand the greatness in their achievement of motherhood.


Movie, Wednesday

July 5, 2 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Public Library. A Tibetan mastiff living in a remote mountain community dreams of being a rock star. But when he heads to the big city to seek his fortune, his unprotected flock of sheep are preyed upon by a hungry wolf. Rated PG.

Meet rescue animals and learn about what’s happening at the new Montgomery County Animal Care and Adoption Center on July 5 at 3 p.m.

Fly Fishing and Fly Casting Basics for Women, July 10

Ladies, no matter your level of expertise or experience, join Trout Unlimited members Pete Jackson and Lynn Hayes for a few laughs and hopefully a new found sport on Monday, July 10 from 6-7:30 p.m. Pete will bring all the ‘stuff’ necessary for everyone to have a chance to ‘cast’ and test their new skills. All the ladies will receive a free annual membership to Trout Unlimited for interest in cold-water conservation too. Pretty good deal! Advance registration is required.

Retro Gaming Extravaganza, July 12

Wednesday, July 12, 1-4 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Public Library. Calling all gamers! Join us for an afternoon of retro gaming fun at Meadowbrook. Various game systems and games will be available to play including Mario, Zelda, Crash Bandicoot, Metroid, Tetris, Pac-Man, & more! Compete in a Mario Kart 64 Tournament and enter for a chance to win awesome video game themed door prizes. Refreshments will be available. Recommended for ages 12 & up (including adults).

Maker Mayhem – Build Our Own Little Free Library, July 12

July 13, 2 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Public Library. Build for fun or enter the challenge for the chance to win the Mystery MiniFig. Recommended for ages 6 and up.


Aromatherapy, July 13

6 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Public Library. Come out for a hands-on introduction to essential oils, the plants they are extracted from, and their practical and therapeutic uses. Take home an aromatherapy spray and scented bath fizzies of your own creation. Registration required and space is limited.


Teen Murder Mystery, July 14

July 14, 6-8 p.m. at the Christiansburg Library. Dive into the case, and be the first to solve it to win a prize. Pizza will be served. Ages 11 and up. Registration Required.


Build-A-Book, July 15

July 15, 1 p.m. at the Christiansburg Library. Come to the library to write, illustrate, and bind your own original book! Encouraged for children of writing age.


Bingo, July 15 & 25

July 15, 2:30 – 4 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Public Library. July 25, 3-4: p.m. at the Blacksburg Library. Play Bingo for a various prizes. Refreshments served. All Ages welcome.

Teen Monster Party, July 17

1:30 p.m. at the Christiansburg Library. Get on your ghoul, march out your mummy, and fly in some fangs for the Teen Monster Party! Enjoy ghastly games, creepy crafts, and spooky snacks. Costumes encouraged.


Exploring Space, July 17 & 18

July 17, 6-7 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Public Library. July 18, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Public Library Meet a rocket scientist. Observe Peeps in a space-like environment with a vacuum chamber. Design and launch a rocket. Solar system scavenger hunt


Homeschool Curriculum Swap, July 17

Homeschooling families are invited to join us for an hour of interesting conversation and a curriculum swap on Monday, July 17 from 10-11:30 a.m. Learn about the learning opportunities available through the library, and tell us what you, as educators, need in terms of programming, support, and library collections. We encourage you to bring new or gently used curriculum materials to trade with other homeschooling families. The number of items you donate is the number of items you can take. Join us!


Author Talk with Gil Harrington and Jane Lillian Vance, July 18

July 18, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Blacksburg Library. On October 17, 2009, a 20-year-old VT student named Morgan Harrington went to a Metallica concert in Charlottesville and never came home. A farmer found Morgan’s remains in a remote pasture about six miles from the concert venue 101 days later. In response to Morgan’s abduction and murder, her mother, Gil Harrington, created the Help Save the Next Girl Foundation. Gil comes to share her story and her book, Morgan Harrington: Murdered and Dead For Good. She is joined by Jane Lillian Vance, one of Morgan’s beloved teachers, whose images and essays about the trials of murderer Jesse Matthew help narrate Gil Harrington’s transcendent journey toward justice and healing. Autographed books will be available for purchase.

July 19, 2-3 p.m. at the Christiansburg Library. This month we will be creating 3D, Wayne Thiebaud inspired art.


Movie, July 19

July 19, 2 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Public Library. A cooler-than-ever Bruce Wayne must deal with the usual suspects as they plan to rule Gotham City, while discovering that he has accidentally adopted a teenage orphan who wishes to become his sidekick. Rated PG.


Floyd Moves It, July 20 & 27

July 20, 12-1 p.m. at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library. July 27, 12-1 p.m. at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library. Join members of Healthy Floyd as they work out to various DVDs. Research shows that lunchtime may be the best time of day to exercise. Every Thursday at noon.

Root Beer Fest, July 21

Root beer floats are NOT just for kids! Between the creamy vanilla ice cream and the frothy root beer foam, how can anyone resist this sweet refreshment? We will celebrate this tasty summer treat and serve root beer floats while supplies last on Friday, July 21 from 2-3 p.m.


PAWS To Read with VT Helping PAWS: Dog Edition, July 22

July 22, 12-1 p.m. at the Blacksburg Library. Parents, reserve a 10-minute reading slot for your child to practice reading aloud to a certified therapy dog, a sweet Golden Retriever named “Yogi,” and his handler, Dr. Corrigan.


Superhero Science, July 22

July 22, 1 p.m. at the Christiansburg Library. Learn about the science behind some of your favorite superheroes! Superman, Storm, Magneto, and more – join us for some super science!


Needle Crafting Group, July 23

2-3 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Public Library. Bring your knitting needles, crochet hooks, and cross stitch to work on while socializing with others.


Creative Writing Workshop

Join us at the Meadowbrook Public Library to improve your writing! Bring your work for small-group feedback and editing. We’ll meet every Thursday of the month.


Stay and Play, a Library Playgroup

Every Wednesday after Storytime, 10:30 – 11:30 AM, Blacksburg Library. Under their parent’s supervision, babies and toddlers can play during this informal gathering. This program is for ages 0-4 and meets in the storytime room.


Wee Play, a Library Playgroup

Every Wednesday after Storytime EXCEPT the first Wednesday of the month, 10:30 – 11:30 AM, Christiansburg Library. Parents and caregivers are invited to socialize while supervising an informal play group for their babies and toddlers. Ages 0-4.


Club M.O.M. (Meeting Other Munchkins)

Every Wednesday after Storytime, 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM, Jessie Peterman Library, Floyd. This play group will meet every Wednesday there is a Storytime planned. Relatives can relax and have a cup of tea while their children play with blocks and other toys.


8-bit Post-It art

All Month, at the Christiansburg Library.Create 8-bit art in the teen area all month long.

Exhibiting Artist: Kathleen Dawe

All Month, at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library. Our exhibiting artist is Kathleen Dawe. Come enjoy her paintings and sculpture throughout July and August.


Junior Artist Program

All Month, at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library. Become a Junior Artist and earn a sketchbook! Just pick up an art card at the front desk, visit Miss Jessie’s Gallery, answer a few questions, then return your signed card to the front desk for a bookmark. Complete five cards, and you will get your very own artist sketchbook. Parental assistance is encouraged, particularly for the littlest Junior Artists.


BackPack Program Donations

The Meadowbrook Public Library is a collection point for items needed for the BackPack Program. Bring your donations of the following items to the library during June: Pop-tops, ravioli, applesauce, peanut butter, plastic bottles of jelly, cereal, 100% Juice boxes, canned tunna or chicken, mac and cheese, Ramen noodles, canned fruit, granola bars or cereal bars. We will also be collecting school supplies for these children.


Montgomery Museum and Lewis Miller Regional Art Center Exhibit: Ruth Lefko

All Month, at the Christiansburg Library. Local artist, Ruth Lefko, will display her art for the Montgomery Museum and Lewis Miller Regional Art Center.
