Today, more than at any time in history, the federal government is relying on external service providers to help carry out a wide range of federal missions and business functions using state-of-the practice information systems.

Many federal contractors, for example, routinely process, store, and transmit sensitive federal information in their systems to support the delivery of essential products and services to federal agencies (e.g., providing credit card and other financial services; providing Web and electronic mail services; conducting background investigations for security clearances; processing healthcare data; providing cloud services; and developing communications, satellite, and weapons systems). Additional, federal information is frequently provided to or shared with entities such as State and local governments, colleges and universities, ad independent research organizations. The protection of sensitive federal information while residing in nonfederal systems and organizations is of paramount importance to federal agencies and can directly impact the ability of the federal government to successfully carry out its designated missions and business operations, including those missions and functions related to the critical infrastructure.

To assist area businesses, local government agencies, colleges and universities to understand their role in the requirements of Cybersecurity, Southwest Virginia Community College’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) is hosting “Cybersecurity for Federal Dollar Recipients” on August 24, 2017. Registration will begin at 8 a.M. and run from 8:30am until Noon on the campus of New River Community College, Godbey Hall, Room 164.

This workshop is sponsored by Southwest Virginia Community College’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) along with Genedge.

Attendees will be informed as to the regulations mandated for federal contractors and subcontractors as well as grant recipients and hear testimonials from two government contractors – Tiber Creek Consulting and Peregrine Technical Solutions – on how they are prepared for the December 31, 2017, compliance deadline.

Don’t take a chance on being hacked! All businesses are at risk! Know what your responsibilities are!

To register go to http://ptac.sw.edu/registrations. Registration is free but is a must. The deadline to register is August 22, 2017 at 4:30 p.m.

For additional information or questions, please call the PTAC at 276-964-7334.
