Roanoke, Va.– Appalachian Power customers can receive a $50 incentive reward through the Appliance Recycling Program simply by getting rid of an old secondary refrigerator or freezer.
Appalachian’s Appliance Recycling Program provides customers with the opportunity to have inefficient refrigerators and freezers picked up at their home at no cost. In addition to the $50 incentive, participants can save as much as $150 annually through lower household energy usage. Older refrigerators and freezers can require as much as three times the amount of energy as newer, more energy-efficient models.
Participation is as simple as calling 1-888-277-0529, or by visiting TakeChargeVA.com/recycle to schedule a time for a pickup. Eligible refrigerators and freezers must be older than 10 years, empty, in working condition, and between 10-30 cubic feet. A check for $50 arrives within four to six weeks after the pickup. A maximum of two units per household per calendar year will be accepted.
“Inefficient refrigerators and freezers contribute significantly to household energy costs,” said Appalachian Power representative Zack Bacon. “This program provides a safe and responsible way to get rid of older appliances and reduce energy consumption while also earning an extra $50.”
Units picked up through the program are transported to an appliance recycling facility operated by ARCA Recycling, Inc. ARCA safely removes harmful materials from the old appliances, reclaiming 95 percent of the materials in the appliances for reuse in manufacturing new products.
