Scouts enjoy the wonders of science with the Mentos geyser experiment. Dropping the Mentos into a two-liter of Diet Coke releases gas that creates an eruption that pushes most of the liquid up and out of the bottle.

The Boy Scouts of America has developed a new program for five-year-old kindergarten boys called Lion Cub Scouts. The Lion program weaves traditional Scouting concepts of character development, leadership skills, personal fitness and citizenship into activities that are age-appropriate and fun for the boys and their parents. Lion Cubs are encouraged to learn and explore through hands-on, high-energy activities.

Boys are recognized for their accomplishments as they work toward a Lion badge. The Lion badge is earned by completing five adventures. Adventures are completed during the den meetings and outings. When an adventure is completed, the youth receives a sticker to put in his Lion Adventure Book.

Lion Cub Scouts was a pilot program last year in four Virginia councils and demonstrated success.

Starting this fall, Pack 145 of Christiansburg will be offering this Lion program along with its other Cub Scouting adventures for Tiger (1st graders), Wolf (2nd graders), Bear (3rd graders) and Webelos (4th and 5th graders).

Pack 145, as well as many other Montgomery County units, provides an exciting way for boys to explore the world around them. Past Pack 145 activities have included a train trip, overnight camping in museums, Pokémon Go NOVA day camp, hikes, bike rodeos, fishing, pinewood derby, field trip to the National D-Day memorial, outdoor camping at the drive-in movie theater and many other unique activities.

The Cub Scout program fuels imaginations, creativity and fun as allows families to experience the growth Scouting can provide. Cub Scout fall recruitment for all ages and ranks will begin soon in Montgomery County.

Flyers will be sent home with elementary school students regarding Join Scouting Nights at local Montgomery County schools.
