Voters can hear all the candidates for local offices at three Candidate Forums held by the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County and the Montgomery County, Radford City, Floyd County branch of the NAACP.
Candidates for the House of Delegates District 7, District 8 and District 12 will be on a panel at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Blacksburg Municipal Building.
Candidates for Blacksburg Mayor and Town Council will be on a panel Thursday, Oct. 12, 7 p.m. at the Blacksburg Municipal Building.
Candidates for Christiansburg Mayor and Town Council will be on a panel, Wednesday, Oct. 18, 7 p.m. at the Christiansburg Town Hall.
The Forums are open to everyone. Each will have a moderator and will be organized so that members of the audience can submit written questions during the presentations.
“The League organizes these events at each election as part of its mission to make the information available,” said Carolyn Rude, Blacksburg, president of the Montgomery County League.
“NAACP has worked with the League on these forums for several years,” added Karen Jones, political action chair for the local branch of the NAACP. “Encouraging all voters to be informed has been a core principle for our organization.”
House of Delegates candidates who will be on Thursday’s panel are: District 7—Flourette Ketner (D) and Nick Rush (R), incumbent and District 8 – Steve McBride (D).
The incumbent candidate, Gregory Habeeb, will not be at the forum because of other commitments; District 12 – Chris Hurst (D) and Joseph Yost (R) incumbent. Charles O. Warren will be moderator.
Blacksburg Mayor candidates who will be on the Oct. 12 panel are: Krisha Chachra, Leslie Hager-Smith and Edward Lawhorn and candidates for the three open council seats are Susan Anderson, incumbent; Lauren Colliver; Ken Jones and Susan Mattingly. Karen Jones will be moderator.
Christiansburg Mayor candidates who will be on the Oct. 18 panel are: D. Michael Barber (incumbent) and Roger L. Woolwine and candidates for the three open council seats are Steve Huppert, incumbent; Merissa Sachs; Bradford “Brad” Stipes, incumbent and Jonathan Taylor. Wayne Worner will be moderator.
