A public comment opportunity to discuss Main Street pedestrian improvements will be held tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Blacksburg Motor Company at 400 S. Main Street.
The Town of Blacksburg is preparing to apply for funding for the design and construction of pedestrian enhancements including accessibility improvements, pedestrian-scale lighting – not too tall and closer together – and improved streetscape elements like benches. The design makes sure the pathways are ADA compliant.
The improvements will happen in the two-block length of sidewalk along Main Street between Roanoke Street and Washington Street.
The grant is federal funding coming through the Virginia Department of Transportation and will be administered through the Transportation Alternatives program.
“The application is part of a competitive process for federal funding that would become available in fiscal years 2018 and 2019 (October 2018 – September 2020),” a town press release wrote.
The decision process for the applications is typically completed by July 2018.
